The relocation of a tree believed to be practically 300 years previous started on Wednesday in Córdoba Province, following two months of protests, authorized appeals and demonstrations.
The white quebracho (Aspidosperma quebracho blanco) tree, native to South America and recognized for its exceptionally onerous wooden, stood beside a motorway within the residential space of Villa Allende, close to town of Córdoba, round 700 kilometres from the capital.
The street is being widened from two to 4 lanes and the tree, sadly, stands in the way in which.
Its removing – involving a crane to extract it, a lorry for transport, and one other crane to replant it some 25 metres from its unique spot – came about underneath heavy police presence.
Dozens of protesters, together with environmental activists and native residents,have demonstrated in opposition to the tree’s relocation. They described the quebracho as an “icon” of Argentina’s endangered native forests and warned that it might not survive the transplant.
Placards on the website learn “Stand robust just like the quebracho” and “Thanks, grandfather.”
The tree, silhouetted alone in opposition to the backdrop of the unfinished freeway, grew to become a rallying level for campaigners, who held vigils, arrange a campsite and organised patrols underneath the slogan: “Save the quebracho.”
