Switzerland kicked off their Euro 2024 campaign with a thrilling 3-1 victory against Hungary at Cologne Stadium.
A surprise choice by coach Murat Yakin, striker Kwadwo Duah proved his worth by scoring his very first international goal early in the game. He was perfectly set up by teammate Michel Aebischer, who himself went on to score a fantastic goal just before halftime.
Hungary started the second half with renewed energy and pulled one goal back thanks to Barnabas Varga’s header. The Hungarians pushed hard for an equalizer, but Switzerland’s defense held strong.
With the game seemingly heading towards a draw, drama unfolded in stoppage time. Substitute Breel Embolo capitalized on a mistake by the Hungarian defense and chipped the ball over the goalkeeper to secure a dramatic win for Switzerland.
This victory puts Switzerland in a strong position in Group A, sitting behind only the tournament hosts Germany who crushed Scotland 5-1.
Dominant First Half for Switzerland
Switzerland controlled the game from the beginning. Duah, who had barely played for Switzerland before, opened the scoring with a neat finish after a great pass from Aebischer. Aebischer then added his own name to the scoresheet with a powerful shot just as the first half ended.
Hungary Fight Back But Fall Short
Hungary came out much stronger in the second half and managed to score a goal through Varga’s header. They had a few chances to equalize, but Switzerland’s defense held firm.
Late Winner Secures Victory
Just when a draw seemed likely, Embolo, who had recently recovered from an injury, came on as a substitute and scored the winning goal in the extra time. This late strike sealed the win for Switzerland.
What’s Next?
Switzerland will face Scotland next, while Hungary will have a tough challenge against Germany in their upcoming Group A matches.
Coach’s Comments
Hungary coach Marco Rossi wasn’t happy with his team’s performance and admitted that beating Germany in their next match seems unlikely. Switzerland coach Murat Yakin, on the other hand, expressed his satisfaction with his team’s tactics and their strong start to the tournament.
