Bavaria’s fairytale castles are UNESCO World Heritage Websites

Schwangau/Paris (dpa) – UNESCO has declared the well-known fairytale castles of Bavaria’s King Ludwig II a World Heritage Web site. At its session in Paris, the World Heritage Committee of the UN cultural organisation added Neuschwanstein Fortress, Herrenchiemsee Palace, Linderhof Palace and the royal lodge on Mount Schachen to the World Heritage Checklist. In Bavaria, efforts to safe this recognition had been ongoing for greater than 1 / 4 of a century.

The sumptuous castles set in idyllic environment in Higher Bavaria have been a vacationer magnet for nearly 140 years. The opulent creations of Ludwig II (1845–1886) attracted greater than 1.7 million guests in 2024, a lot of them holidaymakers from overseas. “The inclusion of the castles on the World Heritage Checklist is an impressive tribute to those spectacular buildings,” stated Maria Böhmer, President of the German UNESCO Fee. They’re all architectural masterpieces, reflecting each the creative creativeness and the eccentricity of the fairytale king.”
